Howdy. My name's Grace, though I'm often known by the handle of Jurious on the web (or more recently amongst the Rushies as "Walsie Girl", owing to my obsession with Sir Francis). I've been a fan of Geoffrey Rush for nearly three years and my enthusiasm shows no signs of wavering - if anything, it has only gotten stronger and stronger! All my excess energies, my overflowing love and respect for the man, have been put into the creation and maintenance of this website, which I named cRUSH for obvious reasons. (And since more obvious website titles seem to already have been taken by the other Geoffrey sites!)
Outside of my love of all things Rush I have a life... somewhere... and am still active on the UK dog scene, showing and training both my own dog and those of my friends and family. I'm an amateur artist and take commissions for sketches of people's dogs. I also write a lot of fanfiction, play video games on my Wii, DS and PS2 (when I have a spare moment), and study full-time at the Nottingham Trent University for a foundation degree in Animal Studies. I've even been to Australia recently for nearly 4 months, and in that time did many amazing and crazy things, met loads of people (including a couple of fellow Rushketeers!), and saw a lot of that wonderful country! Life is good. :)

Anyway, where did the Rush-love begin...?
Geoffrey first captured my attention in the movie Elizabeth, where he made a striking performance as Sir Francis Walsingham, an historical figure who was represented as an intelligent yet deadly assassin in the film's re-imagining of history. Following my viewing of the film, not only did I have the urge to research the true figure of Francis Walsingham, but I also wanted to see more of Geoffrey Rush himself, because he wasn't an actor I was particularly familiar with. Somehow I knew right away that there was something very special about him - and in retrospect, my instincts weren't wrong.
Following Elizabeth, I went on to re-watch Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, a film I'd totally forgotten Geoffrey had starred in, before acquiring a copy of Quills to watch. And after that my fate was sealed - I had become a Rush fan!
I'm not sure what it is about him that makes him such an impressive figure to me - it's hard to put one's finger exactly on the proverbial pulse. Maybe it's the fact that he seems to be able to reinvent himself for every role, and, even though you are well aware you're watching the same actor each time, every character is still very unique; there's none of the ineptness you usually get with the likes of Orlando Bloom or Nicolas Cage, where their every character feels the same. And when Geoffrey's acting, every single inch of him is acting: just watch his eyes and his poise and you can see that he's in-character for every second the camera's on him, not just when he's speaking his lines or confronting another cast member; he's undoubtedly in the class of the contemporary acting elite.
He's also able to take on the most difficult of roles and turn out some incredible performances - his challenging part as the Marquis de Sade in Quills testifies to this, as well as his awe-inspiring stint as Peter Sellers in The Life and Death of..., and his Oscar-winning performance in the critically-acclaimed drama Shine. He's also quite capable of adapting to any genre, be it horror remake (The House on Haunted Hill), romantic comedy (Intolerable Cruelty) or children's animation (Finding Nemo), and even though some of his films are a little less than brilliant (the less said about Mystery Men, the better), you at least know that they're worth watching simply so one can witness the magic Geoffrey brings to the screen.
The only other favourite actor I've really had so far in my life is Christopher Lee, a very British actor who is a veteran of the cheesy-horror-film genre of the 50s and 60s. Lee is far more capable than his roles have allowed him to be, but he has never had the chance to truly prove himself, which is a great shame. I thought that my list would remain Lee-exclusive for all time - and it has stood that test for several years now, because it is very rare that I bless any actor with favouritism - but I was unprepared for my awakening to the acting sensation that is Geoffrey Rush. He has effortlessly managed to penetrate my net of "favourite-actor-exclusivity" and quickly superceded Mr. Lee and taken my top-spot.
I believe that Rush has been far more fortunate than Lee in that he's had more than enough worthy and varied films in which to prove his mettle -- and then some! He's been the bad guy and the hero, both sly and kind, both wicked and pathetic, and has made himself into as many convincing foreign nationalities as he has Australian. His colourful spectrum of films and range of impressive performances have made him a highly esteemed and sought-after actor both in Hollywood and at home, and I can quite happily say that Rush might just be the best in the world today.
Though I admire Geoffrey as an actor in general, I favour his roles in historical or fantastical films above the others due to plain personal taste - hence why Quills and Elizabeth rank over the likes of Shine and The Tailor of Panama in my books. (I've also been told that I have a penchant for mature, scheming men with beards, so it's little surprise that I adore his Walsingham so much. ♥)
I think the crowning joy of Geoffrey Rush is not his talent as an actor but the sheer fact he is a wonderful human being. As a person, he has demonstrated time and again that he has time for his fans, as well as for the press, and is willing to travel miles and miles around the globe to promote his films. He's generous, intelligent, and a truly fine man - and I speak from experience, having been fortunate enough to have met him in person! He deserves as much respect for this as for anything else, and we Rushies are so proud to have such a beautiful man, in both body and soul, as our idol. Thank you, Geoffrey.
